When “Standard” Isn’t Enough
The Leviathan Shorty Cell has become the de facto standard for 2″ (M48×0.75) filters—low-profile, precise, and perfect for compact filter wheels and tight imaging trains. But some astrophotography setups need a little more: a filter that can be mounted directly in the imaging train, between telescope and camera, without compromise. That’s why we developed the Leviathan Universal Cell.

Designed for True Mechanical Universality
The Universal Cell adds just enough axial height and extra female thread to ensure reliable operation across the widest possible range of astrophotography configurations. It’s engineered for scenarios where the filter cannot sit in a standard wheel or drawer and must integrate seamlessly between telescope and camera.
Key Features
- Extra axial height for direct in-train mounting
- Additional female thread for mechanical versatility
- Fully compliant M48×0.75 geometry
- Precision-controlled tolerances for consistent performance
- Black-anodised, low-reflectance interior
- Secure retaining ring for 2 mm or 3 mm optical substrates
Why Universal Matters
Even small differences in mechanical interface can prevent proper mounting:
- Tight wheels or drawers may block thicker filters
- Filters without extra thread may not seat securely between telescope and camera
- Adjacent components can interfere in complex imaging trains
The Universal Cell is dimensioned to avoid these issues, giving astrophotographers a mechanically reliable solution for nearly any system.
Engineering Approach
At Leviathan Optical Engineering, we hold mechanical design to the same standard as optics. The Universal Cell is:
- CNC-machined for dimensional consistency
- Concentric and square to preserve optical alignment
- Engineered to maximize versatility without sacrificing structural integrity
Intended Applications
- Direct mounting between telescope and camera sensor
- Imaging trains with tight backfocus constraints but no room for a wheel
- Multi-filter setups where rotation or alignment must be reliable
- Systems where the Shorty Cell’s low-profile design is insufficient
Available now for astrophotographers who need a mechanically versatile, universally compatible M48×0.75 filter mount.
